Careers

You have come to the right place if you are looking for more information on a career that uses science, technology, and innovation to care for one of our most treasured natural resources. Forestry provides opportunities to work outdoors, or in an office setting. There are a variety of jobs available such as: logging, silviculture, road construction, genetics, biology, wildlife research, water quality and soil retention specialists, trucking, mapping, planning harvesting cycles, etc.

"The idea of spending all of my work time in an office environment did not appeal to me, and the forestry industry is one way of making a living spending time outdoors. What other job pays you to quad and/or hike through the trees for the day? I always say a bad day in the bush is better than a good day in the office!" says Ian Kwantes, forester working in Edson.

"My current role in Forestlands is a logging supervisor. I manage logging contractors in everything from the harvesting of trees to road construction to trucking. My job has me doing a variety of tasks in a day including: dealing with people, computer work, scheduling deliveries, paying contractors, locating roads, planning logging activities, measuring log quality, and creating maps," says Jeff Mackay, forester working in Drayton Valley.

Because the forest is a renewable resource, the forest industry will continue to provide thousands of jobs for decades to come.
